What is Wetplate Photography?Wet-plate photography is an early photographic process invented in 1851. It predates film and involves coating a blackened metal or clear glass plate with a light-sensitive emulsion to produce images formed by metallic silver.
-
How long do I have to stay still for my image to be captured? We will use studio flash for the exposure, capturing your image instantly. However, there is a brief moment between framing the shot and the flash. During this time, please remain still to stay in focus.
-
Can I get extra prints of a plate? Each plate is unique and cannot be replicated or copied. You must be present in person for your image to be captured.
-
When can I see my shot?We develop the plate immediately after capturing your image. You can witness the development process in the darkroom, which takes less than a minute.
-
Can I take the plate home on the same day?Yes, but we recommend leaving the plate with us for a few days. This allows us to varnish and frame it, which helps prevent tarnishing over time. Varnishing typically takes a day or two to fully cure.
-
What should I know before the session? After booking, we'll contact you via WhatsApp with a list of do's and don'ts, including suggestions on attire based on our experience.
-
What is included in the session? You’ll receive one 5x7" tintype that captures 1-5 people. Experience the entire process from the shoot to development in a private studio setting, and your plate will be varnished and framed for longevity. We will also scan the plates for a digital copy.
-
What if I don't like how I look on the plate?Wet-plate photography captures subjects uniquely and may differ from traditional photography. Participants should be aware that this process is not for those seeking an airbrushed appearance. Reshoots will only be considered for chemical failures or anomalies impacting the image quality, not for aesthetic preferences.
-
What should I know before the workshop? After booking, we’ll contact you via WhatsApp with a list of do's and don'ts to help make your experience enjoyable.
-
What is included in the workshop?Participants will learn about the wet-plate photography process and create four 4x5" tintypes. The workshop instructor will also create a demo plate for your keepsake.
-
What if I don't like how the plates turn out?Participants should anticipate some imperfections due to the unique nature of the wet-plate process, which can be affected by chemical reactions, impurities, and environmental factors. The emphasis of the workshop is on learning the process, not just the final outcome.
-
Why do I need to pay the full amount upfront?A full deposit ensures that we can prepare the materials and prevents no-shows, which incurs opportunity costs. If you need to reschedule, a $50 fee will apply as unused materials must be disposed of.
-
Are young children counted as participants?Yes, they are included in the participant count.
-
Why are pets no longer allowed?Due to sharing our space with other retailers and licensing requirements, pets are not permitted in the retail area.
-
What is preferred pricing?Preferred pricing allows us to use your tintype image for marketing and promotional purposes. Ensure that all participants agree to this before proceeding with your booking.
